Concept2 Weight Adjustment Calculator

By the Watta Team · Updated March 2026

The Concept2 weight adjustment calculator normalises rowing ergometer performance for body weight, enabling fair comparison between rowers of different sizes. Heavier athletes have a natural power advantage on the erg because they can apply more force per stroke, but they also carry more mass in a boat. The Concept2 weight adjustment formula compensates for this by estimating what a rower's time would be if they weighed a reference standard of 270 lbs (122.5 kg) for men or 165 lbs (74.8 kg) for women. The formula is: adjusted time = time × (reference weight / actual weight)^0.222. This exponent of 0.222 reflects the empirically observed scaling relationship between body mass and rowing power.

How This Works

Enter your erg time, the distance rowed, and your body weight. The calculator applies the Concept2 weight adjustment formula to produce a weight-adjusted time. If your actual weight is below the reference weight, your adjusted time will be faster (lower) than your actual time, reflecting the disadvantage of being lighter on the erg. If you are above the reference weight, your adjusted time will be slower. The calculator shows both your actual and adjusted splits side by side, along with the percentage adjustment applied.

Formula

Adjusted Time = Actual Time × (Reference Weight / Actual Weight)^0.222, where Reference Weight = 270 lbs (men) or 165 lbs (women)

Examples

A 70 kg rower pulls a 7:00 2K

Weight-adjusted time is approximately 6:41 — reflecting the significant disadvantage of being lighter than the 122.5 kg reference.

A 95 kg rower pulls the same 7:00 2K

Weight-adjusted time is approximately 7:06 — the heavier athlete had a natural power advantage, so the adjustment adds time.

A 60 kg female rower pulls a 7:45 2K (using 74.8 kg female reference)

Weight-adjusted time is approximately 7:30, reflecting the power output relative to the lighter female reference weight.
