2K Time Predictor

By the Watta Team · Updated March 2026

The 2K time predictor estimates your 2,000-metre rowing ergometer performance based on results from other distances or training data. The 2K erg test is the standard benchmark in rowing, typically taking 6 to 8 minutes and requiring near-maximal aerobic and anaerobic output. Prediction models use the known relationship between power output and sustainable duration: as distance increases, average sustainable power decreases in a predictable curve. A common estimation method uses the Paul Law formula, where 2K pace is approximately 5K pace minus 5 seconds per 500m, though individual variation depends on an athlete's aerobic-anaerobic fitness balance.

How This Works

Enter a recent result from a known distance (500m, 1K, 5K, 6K, or 10K) including your time or split. The calculator applies distance-specific conversion factors derived from competitive rowing data to estimate your 2K potential. These factors account for the shift in energy system contribution as distance changes. The prediction assumes proportional aerobic and anaerobic capacity; athletes with unusually high endurance or sprint ability may see actual results differ from predictions. For best accuracy, use a result from a genuine maximal effort within the last 4-8 weeks.

Examples

Your 5K split is 1:55.0/500m

Your predicted 2K time is approximately 7:20 (1:50.0/500m split), based on the standard 5-second per 500m conversion.

You hold a 2:05.0 split for a 6K test

Your predicted 2K is approximately 7:36 (1:54.0 split), assuming proportional aerobic and anaerobic capacity.

Your steady state pace is 2:10.0/500m

Your estimated 2K split is roughly 1:50-1:55, giving a predicted time of 7:20-7:40. Steady state predictions carry more uncertainty.
