Erg Score
By the Watta Team · Updated March 2026
What is Erg Score?
An erg score attempts to capture the full picture of a rowing session by combining multiple performance dimensions into a single number. While split time tells you how fast you rowed and distance tells you how far, an erg score can incorporate pacing consistency, heart rate response, stroke efficiency, and power output to rate the overall quality of the effort. Different apps and platforms implement erg scoring differently, but the concept addresses a real limitation of single-metric analysis — two sessions at the same split time can represent very different physiological demands depending on stroke rate, heart rate, and pacing strategy. A good erg score system rewards not just speed but also efficient, well-paced, physiologically appropriate effort.
How Watta Uses Erg Score
Watta's Effort Score is the app's implementation of an erg score. It rates every session from 0 to 100 by combining cardiac load (40%), work output (35%), pacing consistency (15%), and stroke economy (10%). This composite approach ensures that a well-paced steady state session and an all-out sprint test both receive appropriate quality ratings.
