Ergometer Maintenance

Ergometer Maintenance: Concept2 ergometer maintenance involves periodic chain oiling, flywheel cleaning, and hardware inspection to ensure consistent performance and longevity.

What is Ergometer Maintenance?

The Concept2 RowErg is built for durability but requires basic maintenance. The chain should be oiled every 50 hours of use (or monthly for regular users) with a light machine oil or the Concept2 chain oil pen — an oiled chain reduces friction and extends component life. The flywheel housing should be vacuumed through the vents every 2-3 months to remove dust that changes the drag factor. Check the seat rollers, slide rail, and footrests periodically for wear. The PM5 batteries (2x D-cell) typically last 2+ years with regular use. Monitor your drag factor at a consistent damper setting — a changing drag factor at the same damper position indicates dust buildup or component wear. With proper maintenance, a Concept2 erg lasts 10-20+ years.

How Watta Uses Ergometer Maintenance

Consistent erg maintenance ensures the PM5 data captured by Watta is accurate and comparable over time. A poorly maintained chain or dusty flywheel can alter drag factor and split accuracy, which would affect Effort Score calculations.
