Stroke Count

Stroke Count: Stroke count is the total number of rowing strokes taken during a workout, used to calculate distance per stroke and monitor fatigue-related efficiency changes.

What is Stroke Count?

Stroke count is the total number of completed rowing strokes recorded by the PM5 during a workout. It is displayed on the workout summary screen alongside distance, time, and average stroke rate. Stroke count can be used to calculate distance per stroke (DPS = distance / strokes) and watts per stroke — both measures of rowing efficiency. Monitoring stroke count across repeated workouts at the same distance reveals efficiency changes: rowing 2K in fewer strokes (at the same time) indicates improved technique and power per stroke. Stroke count also helps identify fatigue patterns — if your stroke rate increases but speed drops in the final quarter of a workout, you are losing power per stroke.

How Watta Uses Stroke Count

Watta captures stroke rate data from the PM5 display, from which stroke count over the session can be derived. The Economy component of the Effort Score uses watts-per-stroke calculations that depend on stroke count and total power output.
