Slide Ratio

Slide Ratio: Slide ratio is the timing relationship between the drive and recovery phases of the rowing stroke, ideally approximately 1:2 (drive to recovery).

What is Slide Ratio?

Slide ratio measures the time spent on the drive relative to the recovery. A ratio of 1:2 means the recovery takes twice as long as the drive — this is the target for most rowing. At 20 strokes per minute, each stroke cycle is 3 seconds: 1 second drive, 2 seconds recovery. Good slide ratio creates rhythm, reduces energy waste, and allows the flywheel to decelerate naturally between strokes. Poor slide ratio (rushing the recovery, approaching 1:1) increases fatigue, disrupts timing, and creates a harsh, jerky catch. Slide ratio naturally shifts during racing — at 32+ spm the ratio approaches 1:1.5 — but for training and steady state, maintaining 1:2 is critical for efficiency and injury prevention.

How Watta Uses Slide Ratio

Slide ratio is reflected in the stroke rate data Watta captures. Consistent stroke rates at target power suggest good rhythm and slide ratio. The Economy component of the Effort Score rewards efficient stroke patterns.
